When you hear Music Business Mentorship Classes, some could be scared to death, that I wanna send them back to school. LOL. No, not at all sending you back to elementary.
Now, let us deal with the importance of mentorship classes in the music business. When I studied, the music industry with in-depth attention to the business side of things, my findings left me without a doubt that there are many loopholes that need to be fixed immediately or need immediate attention. This is not uncommon with many of the performing arts disciplines but in music, it is right at your grasp like some hot potatoes served with some hot chicken wings readily available for delivery by UBER Eats in every major city.
Why Do Musicians Always Cut To the Chase?
Okay, before this starts to sound off and grammatically over-constructed, let us get to define what I mean by “Cut to the chase”. Over the years, the tradition or route for becoming a superstar, is that you have to be highly talented, compete in some local competitions organized by some local talent scouts with age limits from 10-16years or 17 as the case may be.
You win the competitions and then, your local scout takes you on and sell you or lend you to the powers that be in the music industry, and phew! you have signed as a recording artist, 360 Degree deals. And you are now well on your way to performing around the world, becoming an ignorant superstar. That was then and a pocket of such incidences now too.
The above painted a picture that sounds so easy to paint without a solid canvas. Now, that kind of scenario is not much applicable, most music artists have taken the bull by the horn, willing to get into the business of music by themselves. From recording to promoting (usually on social media) to distribution, (usually on digital music distribution platforms). Great strides, but the majority of them, would not be interested in getting some education, nor even try to get into some mentorship classes that can open their world to the business of music before dabbling in.
What Are The Importance of Music Business Mentorship Classes?
While some indie artists are skeptical about investing in Music Business Mentorship, the importance of this key knowledge cannot be overemphasized. Before getting into the discussion about what the importance of mentorship classes are in the music business, firstly, let us find the meaning of “Mentorship”. In order to be more accurate with the meaning of mentorship, I went to Wikipedia and what I found is quite simple and interesting:
Mentorship is a relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. The mentor may be older or younger than the person being mentored, but they must have a certain area of expertise.
WikiPedia
Now, taking the above meaning into account, there won’t be that much to explain as it is self-explanatory. So a Mentor is someone with a better understanding of what you are trying to do. Someone with a massive body of experience in the field. Please note that this doesn’t mean they must have gotten rich financially from such activities, but their experience in the field is what you are after.
What Are the Qualities of a Good Mentor?
Besides the definition of mentorship as explained earlier and the experience and talent in the Mentor related field, a good mentor has to have the following:
- Experience in the field of Music Business as in this case
- Love and passion for sharing knowledge
- Passionate about teaching and must possess the ability to make someone understand what he/or she is teaching
- Patience with the student and not getting overwhelmed with emotion if the student is not catching up fast enough.
- Someone with a sense of fulfillment once he has taught someone and the entire exercise was successful.
These are some of the primary qualities to look out for when seeking mentorship in the music business. No matter how much you think you know in the music industry if you are an artist, chances are, you may not know key areas in the business of music that has the potential to make or break you. Hence, it is highly advisable to check yourself into some music business mentorship class to help you understand or get help with the business of music crucial to your career advancement.
